Re: Do Dogs Make Us Live Longer?

Hi everyone!

Recently I read an article an article called, “Do Dogs Make Us Live Longer?” and I wanted to implement my opinions of the article, as well as update you all on my dogs since I know I haven’t done a “fur” post in a long time (if you want to read it here’s the link: When I read the article, I was so relieved to find some true evidence that stated all the great things dogs can contribute to people’s lives. I know quite a few people who object to having a dog because whatever reason they don’t want the pet, perhaps a fear of puppy tendencies to chew, they may track in dirt, are too costly or some other reason. Or just to make a room look like this:

Yes, this would be pretty scary to wake up to. Sometimes puppies can causes messes, but just spending time with dogs will leave them tired and unable to wreck your property, or just adopt an older dog…

Other people don’t want a dog because they are afraid that they maybe too costly. Yes, a trip to the groomers can cost up to $25 or more, and dogs eat, which in turn costs money. However, these can be avoided because daily brushing by the owner and often baths may extinguish the need to go to the groomers. As well as with daily brushing or often bathing, will reduce the amount of hair or dirt tracked all over the house. Plus, there are plenty dog food recipes that can be found on the internet or pinterest.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you that the benefits of having a dog, absolutely outweigh the costs. According to the article, ownership of a dog can help maintain weight, reduce blood presure, improve cardiovascular fitness, can make fewer doctor visits a year and spend fewer nights in hospitals. Plus, when you decide to take a dog into the house you have just welcomed not just a new pet, but a new member to the family.

I mean come on! Who could say no to a cute face like that?! Dogs greatly improve standard of living as they become your ultimate companion in life. They are one of the few creatures in the world that will love you for you who you are, no matter if you are rich, poor, fat, skinny, socially handicapped, or normal. They will never cease to brighten your day as they slop up your tears and always put a smile on your face.

They will brighten your day everyday. That’s my dog Smokey did for me. When I was younger, I had a dog named Smokey, he was half beagle and half welsh corgi. My family and I adopted him from the shelter when he was 5 years old, and honestly that still remains one of the happiest days of my life. At first Smokey was shy, and he was kind of scared of this new world, for all that he had known beforehand was the wet and dreary pound life. But, he gradually opened up like a flower, ready to take on the world. He was playful, and kind and gentle. When I cried, he wouldn’t stop licking my tears until i began to smile. Whenever I would call out his name, he would run toward me so far and with a smile so big, that to me felt like just my presence made him the happiest dog in the world. Yet, he was the one who made me the happiest. He showed bravery and kindness. One time one of the neighbors German Shepard came over and looked like it was about to harm me, and I remember Smokey growling at him until he went away. He was my protector and my savior. But most importantly, Smokey taught me strength. In his last 3 years of living, he developed cancer. His fur turned wiry, he would hardly eat or drink and his face developed multiple disgusting tumors that would constantly bleed so that his face was always caked with blood. I remember one time being at my grandparent’s house with him, there were some family friend over, and the little kids would be scared of him. His appearance was so disgusting that the kids and there parents thought he was a stray dog. But he wasn’t, he was my dog. My beloved dog that I loved oh so very much. Due to some complications at the time, he was under my grandparent’s care, and I remember my mom pleading my grandfather to put him to sleep and take him out of his misery. My grandfather refused to do so because it was against his religious beliefs. Every single time I saw Smokey, I could not help but cry as I watched him slowly deteriorate before my very eyes. Whenever I would call his name, I would begin to cry as soon as I saw his terrible condition, but he would run toward me with the stupidest and cheekiest grin on his face, acting like nothing had ever happened, and that I was the best thing for him. He continued to run toward me, until he could run no more. Smokey died on a Tuesday.

As I wrote this, I couldn’t help but cry, because I will forever remember the special relationship we shared. Dogs are life partners, they will sleep with you, cuddle with you, eat with you, laugh with you, cry with you, and love you, even without ever needing a reason.

Many years later, I have acquired some new life partners their names are Roscoe and Finley. Roscoe is a very fluffy dog, who always makes me laugh because he chuffs at other dogs in the park or animals. While Finley is my trouble maker who is always full of energy and tries to bite his tail and never quite reach it.

Finley is sleeping here. I think he really wanted to cuddle with me, but I was busy at the moment so he found a bear to lay under. I think he wants to cuddle with me more because he’s realizing that I may need to leave soon to start a new chapter in my life.

Unfortunately, Roscoe is being uncooperative at the moment, and the pictures I have are pretty bad at the moment, but I will post one later.

I hope that this post inspired you to rethink your pet situation. If you don’t have a dog, I highly suggest you get one. There are many well deserving dogs at pounds or shelters who are desperate to meet you and eventually love you. I guarantee you that dog will become your best friend that you will want to do everything with. If you have a dog, hold him or her close and thank them, they are truly the most generous and loving creatures that deserve some sort of appreciation. Thanks for reading and I hope you and your canine companion now or to be, love and appreciate each other forever always.

Valentines Day Activities!

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a Happy Valentines Day! Today I wanted to post to talk about what you all could do for next year, or any upcoming events. I probably should’ve posted this before, but oh well….it will get you all planning for next year! Hopefully….

Whether you’re single or with someone on Valentines Day, a romantic movie never falters.

I think everyone has seen the Notebook by now, but I know that not everyone has seen A Walk to Remember. One of my favorite books and romantic movies. It’s just so sweet and will leave you in tears. So grab a bucket of ice cream, a large spoon, and a box of tissues as you prepare to ball your eyes out.

Or go on an adventure and try something new! Grab your significant other or a couple of friends and hit up a mom and pop shop. One that I highly recommend is this Chinese resteraunt called Eggroll King which is on Brookhurst and Adams. The manager is one of the nicest people I have ever met, and of course the food is delicious. Definitely order their house special noodle soup, so good!

Or go gain some culture! Go visit LACMA the Los Angeles County Museum of Art or any other kind of art museum. Even if you’re not all that in to art it will be an experience to remember as you both can make up funny stories, make fun of the art (I could’ve made that), or gather each other’s perspectives on it, (a friend’s or significant other’s).

Or go to a sporting event and support a favorite team of yours or your significant other’s. (Men love sports and food girls). Personally, I love the Angels, so put me at an Angel game and I’m in love. It’s all about Mike Trout man. While most couples might be at the movie theaters, I think it’d be really cool to go to a sporting event and cheer on the team! Basketball and baseball are common favorites and will definitely make Valentines Day exciting.

No matter what you do this or next Valentine’s Day or in the future, make sure that you’re happy and having fun! And you don’t have to listen to my advice, you can always derive inspiration from Pinterest, the internet, your own imagination, or a teacher’s powerpoint (thank you to my English teacher for inspiring this post). It doesn’t matter if you’re single or with someone this holiday/next/in the future have fun, because heck you deserve it!

Innovation: ABA Recreational Basketball

Hi everyone!

So for my English class, we are suppose to do an innovation project where we come up with an idea and share it with the rest of the world. For my innovation project, we are running a basketball league! It’s a lot of fun, and I think every participant in it is having a blast. The basketball league is aimed at high schoolers to come out and play! Basketball is a great sport because it teaches teamwork

is very active, and helps to build physical and mental skills. However in high school, sometimes its hard for people who just want to play the game to find a spot. There’s high school basketball. But playing for the school can be costly, and many people stop playing there because conflicts with coaches, times, or perhaps injury during the season. If high schoolers don’t play at their school then the only other option for them is to play in club teams. However, club teams can be very costly, sometimes totaling up to $90 a month to play in tournaments or games all year around. Plus, the teams are super time consuming. Some people just want to play the game for fun, which is why we started ABA.

ABA stands for Adolescent Basketball Assosciation. We have people sign up on our facebook page:  and then people come out and play, its that simple! Games are every Saturday and we hope to get people out to play all the time. So far it’s been going okay, as we seem to have games every weekend. However, sometimes not everyone from the teams show up, so we can be short on players. If you’re into playing basketball come out and join us! Like our facebook page for updates!

Will anyone care about Timmy ?

I know part of the blog title is “fur,” but what I meant was that the word fur should embody not just animals with fur, but all of them. I just wanted to clarify that before I began this blog post, because this one is about my pet turtle Timmy.

This is a picture of him that I took from his “sign” posted, (I’ll get into that a little later), but first I want to talk about my other turtle Tommy because their fates intertwine. So when I was younger, I use to have a best friend named Rebecca. We still talk, but we definitely don’t have as strong of a relationship as we use to. One day she was riding her bike at the park between her houses with her mom. She stopped at the stop sign so that she could cross the street to my house, however she noticed something. “MOM!” she screamed. Her mom was lounging on the park bench waiting for Rebecca, and was concerned by Rebecca’s tone of voice. “What sweetie?” “MOM, I found a tortoise?!” At first Rebecca’s mom didn’t believer her, I mean we don’t live in or near a desert, where these would be commonly found.

This is the stop sign where she found the tortoise. She and her mom brought the tortoise home, and decided to take care of it. They looked up information about the tortoise and noticed that they weren’t suppose to release it back into the wild because it may carry diseases back to the populations. A few years later, Rebecca’s dad got a job offer in Indiana, so she had to move far away. It was hard for her and me, but in remembrance of her, as well as because the weather wasn’t suitable for turtles, they decided to give the turtle to me. I absolutely love it, and we’ve had Tommy now for a while now. About a year ago, my mom feared that Tommy was feeling a little lonely, and because we loved Tommy so much, we decided to get him a friend. That friend became Timmy, a Russian tortoise we bought from a reptile store. Even though, Timmy was much smaller than Tommy, we hoped they would become best friends. However, what we didn’t realized is that Russian Tortoises are the Houdinis of the tortoises. This means that they run a lot faster than tortoises should run, they can climb, and are not afraid to jump. We kept Timmy in the planter with Tommy, the planter is about 4 feet high, so we felt he was safe. We soon saw that Timmy was brave enough to jump out of the planter, and would escape in search of new adventures. This would lead my family and I on a search every single day to look for our missing family member.

On October 1, 2013, our Timmy went missing. We think that maybe he jumped out of the planter, crawled under the fence and gone somewhere (it’s happened before). Only this time, there wasn’t a friendly neighbor to come by the house to ask if he was our tortoise. At first I was devastated, I mean, who wouldn’t be sad in losing a family member?

My mom put up signs all around our neighborhood, when she people saw her putting up signs they were supportive. However, after that instance, I realized how much people don’t really care if you lose a pet. There are so many tattered signs that are overlooked everyday, of people just desperate for their lost pet. But this thought made me feel guilty, I never put any lost pet sign into my priorities. It’s not like I ever went actively looking for someone’s pet, or one time seeing a stray dog and try to look to see if it has an owner. Sure, I’ll help if it comes right up to my front door, but if it’s out “in the wild,” do I really care? No. I fear for my safety, and feel like it’s just “not my problem.” This thought really made me feel terrible, because now I think everyone will think the way I think. No one is going to care about a lost tortoise, but to me he isn’t just a tortoise he’s family.

“Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” I’m a disney movie lover, and this quote really hits home for me. I guess the quote makes me feel guilty because before losing Timmy, I didn’t really care about anyone else’s ohana. I hope for my sake that Timmy will be found and return home, but when I saw signs for other pets, I didn’t really care. I wanted to post about this on my blog because maybe I could reform the way of mainstream thinking. Or in other word, “feed the need.” There are millions of people, just like me, who are missing their pets, loved ones, sentimental items, etc. These relationships need to be respected as more than their worth, but of their sentimental value and familial ties. From now on, I vow to pay more attention to the missing child or missing pet signs, because the person who put out those signs really just wants their family to be whole once again.

* If you or someone you know has found a small desert tortoise who may/may not resemble or be/not be Timmy, please comment here. Thank you.

Hamlet worthy Cupcakes

I found the recipe off of this website:

but I thought I would share the recipe on my blog because so few people actually knew there was a recipe out there for krabby patties. I know right ! When I was younger, I absolutely LOVED watching spongebob, I still do, but the habit has slowly died with age. However, just because I’m growing up doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy these delicious krabby patties !

I have just begun reading Hamlet, but so far I really enjoy the novel. I felt that Hamlet shared similar traits with the Patrick and Squidward characters. Patrick is definitely not the brightest sea star, but one episode accentuated one of his qualities. This particular episode showed that Patrick had a strong relationship with his parents, and was afraid of letting them down, or appearing less intelligent in front of them. Hamlet is afraid to let his father down, and feels that in order to retrieve his father’s approval he must avenge his father by killing his uncle. Hamlet is also like Squidward because quite frankly, they both have some morbid or evil thoughts.

Anyways, I just wanted to talk about the comparison because I thought maybe if Hamlet had some of these (AWESOME) krabby patty cupcakes maybe he wouldn’t be such a frownie brownie.

Here’s the recipe:

For Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 (8-ounce) package low-fat cream cheese
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Krabby Patty Cakes:
12 baked yellow cupcakes, paper liners removed
1 batch brownies baked in a 13x9x2-inch baking pan (using one 18.3-ounce package brownie mix)
1 to 1 1/2 cups Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe below)
Red, yellow, and green food coloring
Water or light-color corn syrup
Sesame seeds or coarse sugar

For Cream Cheese Frosting:
In a medium mixing bowl, beat one 8-ounce package low-fat cream cheese for 30 seconds. Gradually beat in 1 cup sifted powdered sugar. Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

For Krabby Patty Cakes:
1. Cut cupcakes in half horizontally; set aside. Using a 2-inch round cookie cutter, cut 12 circles from cooled brownies. (Save scraps for another use.)

2. Place a brownie circle on each cupcake bottom. Divide frosting into 3 portions. Using food coloring, tint frostings red, yellow, and green. Place tinted frostings into disposable decorating bags or plastic food storage bags. Snip tip or corner of bags.

3. Pipe a zigzag of green frosting around edge of each brownie circle for lettuce leaf. Pipe a drizzle of red icing for ketchup and a drizzle of yellow icing for mustard on top of each brownie circle. Place cupcake tops on top of frosting. Brush cupcake tops with a little water or corn syrup. Sprinkle with sesame seeds or coarse sugar.

Makes 12 cupcakes

Sorry to get so off topic, but it was just a reason that I really wanted to post this recipe. This recipe is very delicious, but of course it is because krabby patties are suppose to be delicious! I hope you all enjoy these krabby patties, thank goodness you can just make them instead of try to steal the secret formula  like plankton. Happy cooking ! 🙂

What my “Teddy Bear” Needed and What many others desperately need

For those who have visited my blog before, you may know that I have a dog named Finley. Finley is a Jack Russell Terrier (possibly a mix) puppy. However, some of you may not know that I have another dog named Roscoe. Yes Roscoe, as in Roscoe’s fried chicken and waffles. My parents agreed on bringing one dog into the family from the pound, but when I met both dogs I was at a stalemate. I couldn’t decide. We could adopt Finley, he was adorable, sweet, and loved to lick my face. He was so cute, and in such high demand. There were about 7 families during the time we were looking at him, who wanted to know if he was up for adoption because they wanted him. Or we could pick Roscoe. Roscoe is 4 years old and he’s half Cardigan and half Welsh Corgi. Whenever I looked at him he had this pant that looked liked he was smiling, he had such charisma. It was a hard choice. When we put them next to each other though, they got along, so we decided to get them both (thanks mom and dad!).

However, Finley and Roscoe weren’t my original choices.

This is Frankie. At the beginning of summer, I went to the animal shelter once and I saw this dog. I was absolutely in love with him. I was heartbroken, he was so sweet, gentle and cute. He was being looked over though for a few reasons: 1. he was a senior dog, not many people want seniors because they have less time to enjoy the dog, 2. he had some “hot spots” on his skin, from a rash or something, it made him appear ill. 3. he was a long haired weiner dog, long haired dogs shed. To see his happy face in this dark and dreary cell was terrible. The pavement is wet because the workers hose it down in the morning to clean off the feces, so the dogs were always shivering. There aren’t a lot of donations or funds of nice and warm blankets. If they had anything, they would get holey, ragged towels. I wanted him so bad, but my parents wouldn’t let me have him. So I became determined to find a better life for him, a life with me. I made a contract with my parents, if I did my chores every single day and got signatures from them 2x a day as proof then I would be able to get a dog. The contract ended at the end of summer. I thought I could do it, I was determined to find Frankie a better home, I loved the dog so much and watching him suffer was terrible. I made his picture my phone wallpaper and visited him almost every week. No one really understood my love for him, they just cast him aside as an “option,” my mom would say he’s too old. My grandparents looked over and said “he’s ugly” or “why does he look so ill?”

Unfortunately, I was never able to make him mine. The week before my contract was over I went to visit him. I was so excited to finally make him mine, and tell the ladies that work there that I could take him home. He had just been swept up by a rescue. The rescue didn’t like the treatment or attention he was receiving so they took him to the Los Angeles Dachshund Rescue. I was crushed, my parents weren’t even that into the idea of adopting Frankie in the first place, the fact that he was in L.A. made it harder. Not to mention the new shelter was very strict on who could adopt their dogs, it didn’t look like our house would pass the inspection for a dachshund.

So here on my blog I propose an idea to the world, a lesson to be learned from this story. Please. Go adopt. Give a pet a loving home, you will be surprised on how much they will melt your heart and brighten your day. They will immediately turn from pet to family. Especially if it’s a senior, I know they don’t live as long, but think of the impact you make on that animal. It’s a need we need to feed. An animal’s need. An animal who is crying every night, just dreaming of having a loving and caring family like you.

The Beginning of a New Era

Hello friends!

My name is Alyssa and welcome to my tumblr! It’s called food, fun and fur for a reason.

In the future I will be posting pictures and recipes of food. I mean who doesn’t like food? I am a total food lover, and just looking at delicious recipes and food makes me first of all hungry, as well as happy, to see what I can create after putting a few simple ingredients together. It definitely adds variety to my life and my plate. These recipes may not be “gourment,” because hey, I haven’t had much experience cooking to be perfectly honest, but I will definitely have good recipes to share.

This will be my first recipe I will be posting, so stay tuned. I warn you, common side effects of ingesting these “oreo balls” causes a sugar rush, a never ending flow of ecstatic happiness, and an excessive drooling for more. They taste like cookies and cream ice cream without the ice cream. YUMMY !

On this tumblr page, I also want to talk about fun. The word fun is an entity that can embody many things. This includes fun ideas or activities, or fun-e (get it like funny?) so punny… I think everyone sometimes have rough patches in their lives that they really need to ignore and absorb themselves into something that can take their mind of things. Under this topic, I will include a few positive messages as well, because sometimes it’s fun to be reinspired and have faith in the world once again. Please stick through this topic with me. I may try to be funny, and it might be terrible, I make a lot of lame jokes, but I try right? I just want to try my best, and if I can get at least one person to read a post under this category and smile, to make a difference, I know I have succeeded.

Ellen Degeneres is my inspiration. I am definitely not a comedian like her, but I hope to crack some jokes, or bring up some new fun ideas like she does!

The last category I will be talking about on tumblr is fur! Not literal fur, like clothing, but my furry friends! My house has become an anarchy, my pets are winning the great battle of government. The animals outnumber the humans! I have two dogs, two cats, and two tortoises. The remaining posts will be about them and the adventures I have with them, either real or made up stories. They really mean the world to me, and make enduring hard times that much easier. I will also be posting about other kinds of animals too!

My first pet that I will be introducing is my dog Finley! He’s a 3 month old jack russell terrier mix. This isn’t a real picture of him unfortunately, because he’s being stubborn at the moment, but he kind of looks like this puppy! He’s really cute, but he’s mischievous as well (as you all will soon find out)!

I really hope this tumblr interests you. Stick around for more food, fun and fur!
